Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan on wednesday said the government would implement the July Charter in the spirit of the July Uprising, expressing optimism that the movement had paved the way for a prosperous and democratic Bangladesh.

"We will implement the July Charter in the spirit of the July Uprising. People now want prosperity and democracy. We believe that the uprising has brought about a significant transformation," he said.

The minister made the remarks after laying a wreath at the July Martyr Memorial in Shahbagh this morning on the occasion of July Mass Uprising Day.

Azam Khan said the uprising was not merely a mass movement but the beginning of a new chapter of political and institutional reforms.

He said the elected government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had begun the journey of rebuilding the country by drawing inspiration from the spirit of the uprising.

"Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has started the journey of rebuilding the country alongside the entire nation. He also tirelessly guided the July Mass Uprising," the minister said.

Referring to the political background of the uprising, Azam Khan said it was the outcome of an 18-year struggle by political parties, including the BNP, together with students and people from all walks of life.

He called on all political parties and leaders to preserve national unity.

"I request everyone not to divide the nation over narrow personal interests. The people have united for a prosperous and democratic country. If anyone tries to behave like the fallen fascist regime and divide the nation again, the public will not accept it," he said.

The minister also said freedom of speech had been restored and that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, would continue working to build a prosperous Bangladesh.
