Dhaka has been placed under heightened security ahead of the Awami League’s founding anniversary on Tuesday (June 23), with law enforcement agencies intensifying surveillance to prevent any untoward incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police has intensified checkpoints and patrols across the capital, deploying special security measures at more than 200 strategic locations. The move, police said, is aimed at preventing sabotage, unrest, or any form of disruption surrounding the day.
Speaking to media, DMP’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Niaz Mehedi said checkpoint operations began on Monday as a precautionary measure. He noted that searches are currently underway at the Mastul police checkpoint in Purbachal and will be gradually expanded across different parts of the city.
According to police sources, intensified search operations began in multiple areas of the capital from the afternoon. Additional patrols and checkpoints have been set up in key locations including the airport area, Rampura, Hatirjheel, and Tejgaon.
Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamrul Hasan Talukder said security patrols on airport roads have been increased alongside ongoing checkpoint operations.
Rampura Police Station OC Jahangir Hossain confirmed that a checkpoint has been installed in front of the BTV building, with enhanced surveillance across the area.
Hatirjheel Police Station OC Asaduzzaman said that patrols are ongoing from Malibagh rail gate to Rampura kitchen market, while entry points to Hatirjheel are also being kept under strict surveillance through checkpoint inspections.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan said maximum vigilance has been enforced across Mohammadpur, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, and the Tejgaon industrial area. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against any attempt to organize rallies or engage in subversive activities.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police further said that over 200 strategic points across the capital will be placed under special police pickets and checkpoints. All entry routes into Dhaka will remain under strict surveillance to prevent the entry of suspicious individuals.
Specialized police units, including the Detective Branch (DB), Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC), Special Branch (SB), and Internal Affairs Division (IAD), will remain actively deployed alongside regular forces. Additionally, 15 Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been kept on standby, while reserve forces are positioned at four central control rooms to respond immediately to emergencies.
More than 18,000 police personnel will be deployed across the city, with senior officers also supervising field operations to ensure effective coordination and oversight.
Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure ahead of the day, the Bangladesh Army has been deployed in the capital and six districts. The Army is working in support of civil authorities to help maintain and control the law and order situation on the ground.
