President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman offered Eid-ul-Azha prayers at the National Eidgah in the capital on Thursday morning.
Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek, khatib of the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, led the congregation. He also delivered a special sermon highlighting the significance of Eid-ul-Azha and the spirit of sacrifice in Islam.
Although the congregation was scheduled to begin at 7:30am, thousands of worshippers started arriving at the Eidgah from early morning. As the venue reached full capacity, many devotees offered prayers on adjacent roads.
At one stage, worshippers spread across nearby areas, including Kadam Fountain, Shiksha Bhaban and the Shikhha Bhaban intersection.
Alongside ordinary devotees, the congregation was attended by the chief justice, cabinet members, judges of the Appellate and High Court divisions, diplomats from Muslim-majority countries stationed in Dhaka, senior government officials and political leaders.
The Eidgah and surrounding roads were decorated for the occasion, while the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arranged drinking water facilities at several points.
Strict security measures were also in place around the Eidgah. Law enforcement personnel remained on high alert, and worshippers were allowed entry only after security screening.
