At least eight farmers were killed in lightning strikes across six districts of the country on Wednesday, between noon and the afternoon. Among the victims, three died in Naogaon, while one death each was reported in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Mymensingh, Jamalpur, and Natore. All the victims were working in fields harvesting boro paddy when the incidents occurred.
In Naogaon, three people were killed by lightning in Niamatpur and Mohadevpur upazilas. The incidents took place in Ramnagar village under Chandannagar Union and in Hajinagar Union of Niamatpur around noon.
Niamatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman said that a farm worker was killed on the spot while harvesting paddy in Hajinagar Union. The victim, a resident of Khaserhat Uthapara area, could not be immediately identified. Another victim, Anukul Chandra Mohanta, died in Ramnagar village while collecting harvested paddy.
Mohadevpur Police Station OC Omar Faruk said that farmer Dilip Chandra Barman was killed by lightning while working in a field in Kurapara village under Khajur Union.
In Kurigram, a farmer named Obaidul Haque died after being struck by lightning while harvesting paddy in Badijamalpur village of Nageshwari upazila. The victim was the son of Abdul Haque of the same village, confirmed Nageshwari Police Station OC Abdullah Hil Zaman.
In Lalmonirhat, Yusuf Ali died after being struck by lightning while working in a cornfield in the Bhuljarhat area of Bhothmari Union in Kaliganj upazila. The information was confirmed by Kaliganj Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Osman Gani.
In Mymensingh, Abdur Rashid died in Nandail upazila while harvesting paddy. The incident was confirmed by Union Parishad member Abdul Kuddus of Ward No-1 under Khairua Union.
In Jamalpur, A farmer named Sohel Mia died in Dewanganj upazila after being struck by lightning while working in the fields. The incident was confirmed by Dewanganj Model Police Station OC Anwar Hossain.
In Natore, Aziz Mondol died in Lalpur upazila while working in agricultural land in Naopara village of Bilmaria Union. The incident occurred in the Nawsara Sultanpur char area around noon. The victim was the son of Moslem Mondol, confirmed Lalpur Police Station OC Shafiqul Islam.
