A retired traffic police constable died on Monday morning after hacking three people, including his son and subsequently jumping from a three-story rooftop in the Banchanagar area of Lakshmipur municipality.
The deceased was identified as Nasir Ahmed, son of Arshad Ali from Purba Ekhlaspur village in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur, had retired from the police force in August last year. He had been with his family in a rented house at Peshka Bari for the past seven years.
According to relatives of the injured victims and local residents, Nasir retired from the traffic police in August last year. His elder son is physically challenged, and his wife had gone out of town with him. On Sunday night, Nasir was at home with his younger son, college student Imran Ahmed.
Family members said Nasir fell ill during the night, and his son brought him medicine. However, in the morning, Nasir allegedly attacked Imran with a machete while he was asleep, leaving him critically injured.
As Imran managed to come outside in an injured condition, a neighbour named Swapan attempted to help him by giving him a lungi. At that moment, Nasir reportedly attacked Swapan with the machete, seriously injuring him. Another neighbour, also named Nasir, rushed to rescue them but was similarly attacked and injured.
Following the attacks, Nasir reportedly jumped from the third floor of the building, sustaining critical injuries.
Police and locals rescued the four injured men and rushed them to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. Nasir Ahmed succumbed to his injuries approximately three hours later while undergoing treatment.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at Sadar Hospital Dr Arup Pal confirmed the death and stated that two victims Imran and Swapan were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to the severity of their injuries. The third victim is receiving treatment locally.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance), Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi, stated that preliminary findings suggest the retired constable was mentally unstable. A formal investigation is underway.
