All members of the National Human Rights Commission have resigned. They stepped down after the ordinance issued during the interim government was repealed, and an open letter was later sent to the media on their behalf.
National Human Rights Commission Secretary Kudrat-A-Elahi told reporters on Monday that the previous commission had automatically ceased to exist after the ordinance was repealed.
On Thursday, parliament passed the National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill by voice vote. The bill states that it will take effect immediately after publication in the gazette and approval by the president.
The parliament also restored the National Human Rights Commission Act, 2009, rejecting objections from the opposition while passing the bill to repeal the ordinance.
On February 5, 2026, the interim government appointed the chairperson and members of the commission. Former High Court judge Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury was appointed chairperson, while Mohammad Nur Khan, Nabila Idris, Dhaka University teacher Mohammad Sharif Ul Islam and human rights activist Ilira Dewan were appointed as members.
On the resignation issue, outgoing commission member Nur Khan said the government had not asked them to resign. He said they were left in a state of confusion and considered resignation appropriate once the ordinance that formed the commission was no longer in force.
Kudrat-A-Elahi said the commission no longer existed after the ordinance was repealed. He added that he had not read the open letter sent by the members.
