JU student found dead in Savar rented house

Police suspect murder and sent the body for an autopsy

The body of a female student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was recovered from a rented house in the Islamnagar area of Savar, Dhaka.

She was later taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where doctors declared her dead.

The deceased, Sharmin Jahan, was a student of the Department of Public Administration, 51st batch (2021–22 academic session) of the university. She hailed from the Kachua area of Chandpur.

According to university sources, Sharmin lived in a rented house near the campus in Islamnagar with her husband, Fahim Al Hasan.

According to her husband, he was not at home during the afternoon. When he returned between around 2pm and 3pm, he found the main door of the house locked from the outside. After entering the house, he saw Sharmin lying on the floor in a bloodied condition. There were deep injury marks on her head, and she was completely motionless.

With the help of the house owner and neighbours, Sharmin was quickly taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. After examination, the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Duty officer of Enam Medical College and Hospital, Yusuf Ali, said: “She was brought to the hospital around 5:15pm. She was already dead when she was brought in, so we declared her brought dead.”

After receiving the news, Jahangirnagar University Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam and several students arrived at the hospital.

Proctor Rashidul Alam said: “We have been informed about the incident and have provided all possible assistance. We have requested the police administration to conduct a proper investigation.”

Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rubel Howlader said: “This is a murder case. The body has already been sent to Suhrawardy Medical College for autopsy. Further details will be known after the post-mortem examination.”
