The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam on Saturday said journalists’ critical reporting on the judiciary is meant to ensure accountability, not to disrespect it.
“We write to hold the judiciary accountable. It is a crucial institution, and the public has the right to know about its performance. Our reporting is always respectful, never intended to insult,” he said. “I urge you to be a strong support for independent journalism.”
Anam made the remarks at Media Convention 2026, jointly organized by the Editors’ Council and the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in Dhaka.
Highlighting the complementary roles of independent journalism and a free judiciary, he said, “Contempt of court is a powerful tool, but it must not be misused. Sometimes, we regret judgments or statements that go against independent reporting.”
He underscored journalists’ social responsibility, saying, “We enter this profession not just for a job, but to serve society. Our mission is to uphold democracy, human rights, equality, and protect the rights of people from all communities. This is the core principle of our profession.”
Anam also noted that the constitution protects only two professions: the judiciary and independent media. “A society with strong independent journalism is democratic, equitable, and respects citizens’ rights. Journalists must always be aware of this,” he said.
Urging journalists to uphold honesty, integrity, and ethical standards, he added, “Editors’ moral lapses affect the institution and tarnish the profession. Media owners must invest in journalism as a social mission, not just a business. If journalism serves commercial interests alone, the public will reject it.”
Addressing the government, he said, “Independent journalism is the only institution that will tell you the truth. No party member, bureaucrat, or intelligence officer will. A government that genuinely respects independent media benefits the most.”
