Senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna, who had recently sought appointment as a state-appointed defence lawyer for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in two ICT cases related to enforced disappearances and torture under the previous government’s TFI-JIC cell, has stepped back from the role, citing a lack of confidence in the tribunal.
He announced his decision on Thursday via a post on his verified Facebook profile. In a Facebook Live, Panna said he will no longer defend Hasina at the ICT due to lack of confidence in the court, and will instead focus on defending Advocate Fazlur Rahman.
He stated: “Although I have not yet received formal appointment, if I get it, I will notify the tribunal. If not, I am informing you from here — I will not stand in court to defend Bangabandhu’s daughter. Whatever happens, will happen.”
Commenting on judicial confidence, Panna said: “I leave it to the people. International bodies like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have commented on ICT trials under 16 years of Awami League rule. If I cannot defend her freely in court, then there is no point in being appointed as her lawyer.”
He emphasized his commitment to defending Advocate Fazlur Rahman, stating: “Fazlur Rahman has never opposed the Liberation War. Despite our political differences, I will defend him.”
Panna urged the public not to misinterpret his decision, adding, “I am human and act on what I believe is right. Criticism is fine, but abuse is not — it makes no difference from bot trolls. I repeat, I will not be Sheikh Hasina’s lawyer.”
He also referred to another news item regarding land allocation, saying, “Rajuk gave land to Saima Wazed Putul and Joy without applications. I will try to appeal and support those who do, and I won’t abandon the fight.”
Ending his remarks, he asserted, “Remember one thing — this country will not go into the hands of Pakistanis, fundamentalists, or anti-liberation forces. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”
