A 40-year-old man, who sustained burn injuries in an explosion apparently from gas leak at a building in the capital's Jatrabari area, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday afternoon, raising the death toll from the incident to two.
The deceased was identified as Ripon, husband of one Eti, who also died in the incident.
Earlier, three members of the family, including the duo, sustained serious burn injuries in the explosion around 1:40am on the ground floor flat of a six-storey building on Shahid Faruk Road in the Jatrabari area.
Of them, Ripon, 40, suffered 70% burns, his wife Eti, 30, suffered 45% burns and their daughter Rafia, aged around 3 to 5 years, who sustained 90% burns, said Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, Resident Surgeon at National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The injured were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where Eti breathed his last around 1pm, said Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital police camp.
The child is undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said.
The fire broke out reportedly after a mosquito coil was lit, triggering an explosion believed to have resulted from accumulated gas inside the flat.
