National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Prof Ali Riaz has said political parties have reached a consensus that emergency law should not be used for political purposes.
He made the statement during a media briefing following the second session of the 10th day of the second phase of dialogues between political parties and the commission at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Monday.
Ali Riaz mentioned that leaders of political parties have given their opinions on amending the law.
He said the day’s agenda included the expansion of lower courts at the upazila level, the declaration of a state of emergency, and women’s representation.
However, due to time constraints, discussions on women's representation could not take place, he added.
"The remaining two issues were discussed. There was consensus on establishing lower courts at the upazila level, although political party leaders proposed taking some considerations into account."
Proposals were made to retain the existing chowki courts, establish necessary infrastructure, and avoid setting up courts in upazilas close to district headquarters, he added.
He said the day’s discussions were successful and thanked the political parties for their participation.
Ali Riaz added that women’s representation will be discussed at the meeting scheduled for Thursday.
