Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Monday ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the role of former top election officials in organizing three controversial general elections.
He issued the directive during a meeting of the National Consensus Commission, which he chairs, at the state guesthouse Jamuna.
The probe will look into the conduct of former chief election commissioners, election commissioners and secretaries of the Election Commission Secretariat, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
The meeting was attended by National Consensus Commission Vice-Chair Prof Ali Riaz, members Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain and Dr Mohammad Ayub Miah.
Commission members briefed the chief adviser on the progress of drafting the July charter.
"Consensus has been reached on several issues," said Ali Riaz. "We expect to finalize the charter soon in consultation with all political parties."
Yunus expressed optimism that the document would be ready for public presentation by July. “Everyone is eagerly waiting for the July charter.”
Sharing his recent experiences in London, he said members of the Bangladeshi diaspora and students there were highly interested in the reform process and had frequently asked whether they would be able to vote in the next election.
“We must make every effort to ensure the voting rights of expatriates,” Yunus said. “We need to explore options like postal ballots and consult relevant stakeholders.”
During the meeting, Badiul Alam Majumdar, who leads the Electoral Reform Commission, emphasized the need for accountability.
“All political parties agree that those involved in conducting the three disputed elections must be investigated and held accountable,” he said.
