Following a continuous ten-day holiday for Eid-ul-Azha, government offices, banks, and financial institutions are set to reopen on Sunday.
The second-largest religious festival for Muslims in Bangladesh, Eid-ul-Azha, was celebrated on June 7 this year. June 4 marked the last working day for government officials and employees ahead of the holiday.
The same applied to most news organizations, which also wrapped up operations on that day.
From June 5, journalists began a five-day holiday while government officials started a ten-day break.
According to a decision by the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (Noab), all media houses concluded their Eid break on June 9. Meanwhile, as per the government decision, the official holiday for public servants ends on June 14.
Earlier, in a meeting of the Advisory Council held at the secretariat on May 6, it was decided through an executive order to declare June 11 and 12 as holidays for government offices.
To adjust for the extended leave, offices remained open on two preceding Saturdays.
Based on the Advisory Council’s decision, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification on May 7, declaring June 11 and 12 as official holidays.
The notification also stated that offices would remain open on May 17 and 24, which fell on weekly holidays.
Accordingly, government offices were open on those two Saturdays, making the overall break span ten consecutive days for public servants.
