Police have arrested Shahjahan, president of the Swechchhasebak League’s Narayanpur Union unit, for his alleged involvement in an attack on Mehedi Hasan—general secretary of the Jagannath University Debating Society and a former student representative of the Public Administration Reform Commission.
The attack took place on Saturday in Mehedi’s hometown under South Matlab police station in Chandpur district.
He is currently undergoing treatment at a local health complex in Chandpur.
Mehedi, a student of the 2018–19 session in the Public Administration department at Jagannath University, previously served as a member of the interim government’s Public Administration Reform Commission.
Describing the incident, Mehedi said: “I was near my house when I came across a group involved in drug-related activities. As I tried to speak to them, they surrounded me. Suddenly, they brought out sharp weapons and attacked me without warning.”
South Matlab police station Officer-in-Charge Saleh Ahmed said: “After receiving the report, I rushed to the scene, detained one suspect, and ensured Mehedi received initial treatment. A joint operation involving army and police teams is ongoing to arrest the remaining attackers.”
Jagannath University’s proctor said: “I’ve contacted the Chandpur Superintendent of Police and the OC of Matlab police station. One attacker has already been detained, and operations are underway to catch the others.”
