Update : 17 May 2025, 07:13 PM

Dismissed soldier Md Naimul Islam was arrested on Saturday on charges of sabotage and inciting unrest.

Since 5 August 2024, he had reportedly been involved in planning subversive activities alongside a group of dismissed or former army personnel, including delivering provocative statements to various media outlets, as per an ISPR press release issued on Saturday.

As part of these activities, he was allegedly planning to organize a major act of sabotage under the guise of a protest rally at the entrance of Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday, the release said.

He had also been actively spreading inciteful propaganda on various social media platforms in connection with the planned demonstration, it added.

To deter such disciplinary breaches, an army delegation attempted to make contact with him around 2pm on Saturday in the Bot Tola Bazar area of Khilkhet.

At that time, Naimul, accompanied by a few associates, launched a sudden attack using local weapons on military personnel present at the scene. A nearby army patrol team quickly arrived and apprehended Naimul along with two of his accomplices, said the release.

Md Naimul Islam was dismissed from service due to multiple violations of military discipline, including demands for dowry from his wife, physical and mental abuse, and involvement in other misconduct.

Legal proceedings against the dismissed soldier are currently underway.
