Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has unveiled a street plaque named after student Farhan Faiyaz, who was killed during the July mass uprising.

On Saturday, DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia inaugurated the plaque on Dhanmondi’s Old Road No 27. Present at the event were Farhan’s father, Alhaj Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan, and teachers from his institution, Dhaka Residential Model College.

On July 18, 2024, during a student protest against discrimination held between Rapa Plaza and Genetic Plaza on Dhanmondi’s Old Road No 27, Mohammad Farhanul Islam Bhuiyan (Farhan Faiyaz), an 11th-grade student at Dhaka Residential Model College, was shot in the chest and killed during an attack by police and student activists from the ruling party.

At the plaque unveiling, Administrator Shahjahan Mia said: “Farhan Faiyaz, a brilliant student from Dhaka Residential Model College, was martyred in the July uprising. He is one of the many students and citizens who sacrificed their lives for a discrimination-free Bangladesh. Our efforts will continue until the ideals of their sacrifice are fulfilled.”

In his speech, Farhan’s father Alhaj Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan said: “My only child was martyred during the anti-discrimination student movement — this loss is irreparable. I sincerely thank the interim government and DSCC for naming the road after my son. I hope everyone who contributed to the anti-fascist movement will be honored in time.”

Guests at the event unveiled the street plaque and participated in a prayer ceremony in memory of those martyred and injured in the July uprising. DSCC Chief Executive Officer Dr Md Zillur Rahman and heads of various departments were also present.
