Former state minister for education Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said that people want quick elections due to the interim government's failure to run the country effectively and make the right decisions in many cases.
He made these remarks on Wednesday afternoon at the National Art Gallery Auditorium of the Shilpakala Academy in the capital.
He said: “Those who are across the border and trying to sneak in quickly, they are fueling the ongoing movement. We do not want this government to fail. Dr Yunus is a globally respected individual. We hope he will prioritize the democratic aspirations of the people and steer towards a roadmap for elections.”
He added: “We achieved independence through the Liberation War after being oppressed by Pakistanis. That too was a struggle for democracy.”
Dr Ehsanul further said that in the July uprising, political parties created the background for student movements. "But this time, after the movement, students have distanced themselves from studies."
"In the past, successful student activists used to return to their study tables, whereas today’s student leaders do not want to return to class. Instead, they want to run the state, but are unwilling to prepare themselves for such responsibilities," he added.
He posed a question: “If everyone becomes busy with politics, then what will be the state of our educational institutions? We must think about that.”
Addressing the students, he said: “You must acquire proper academic and moral knowledge during your student life. You must keep learning at every moment.”
