To ensure smooth travel for holidaymakers during Eid-ul-Azha, movement of trucks, covered vans and lorries will be suspended on national highways for six days—three days before and three days after Eid.
However, vehicles carrying sacrificial animals and emergency goods will be exempt from the restriction, Railways Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said while speaking to reporters after a meeting in Dhaka on Monday.
Fouzul said the ban will be in effect on June 4, 5, 6 and June 12, 13, 14.
The restriction will not apply to transports carrying sacrificial animals, daily essential food items, perishable goods, medicine, garments, fertilizer and fuel.
He added that cattle markets will be set up within designated boundaries and closely monitored.
Monitoring teams will work to prevent overcharging of fares from passengers, the adviser said.
He further said that instructions have been given to curb extortion and increase police surveillance on highways.
