Fugitive death row convict in BDR carnage case arrested

RAB arrested Rezaul Karim, a death row convict, in Lohagara, Chittagong

A fugitive solider, sentenced to death in the BDR carnage case, has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

He was apprehended during a drive conducted on Sunday night in the Four Seasons area under Lohagara Police Station.

The arrestee has been identified as Rezaul Karim, 49, son of Abul Basar of Purbo Dengapara in Patiya upazila of Chittagong.

Senior Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-7 ARM Mozzafar Hossain, confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune.

He said: “Md Rezaul Karim, a fugitive convict sentenced to death in the sensational BDR carnage case, has been arrested. He has been handed over to Patiya Police Station.”

According to a press release issued by RAB, on February 25 and 26, 2009, at the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka, mutinous BDR personnel took control of the compound and brutally murdered 57 army officers including the then Director General Major General Shakil Ahmed, along with 17 civilians.

During the carnage, they also held many officers and their families hostage, vandalised government installations and looted valuables.

In connection with the carnage and mass killing, a case was filed with New Market Police Station in Dhaka, accusing 850 individuals.

The case number is 09(04)2009.

Md Rezaul Karim was one of the convicts sentenced to death in the verdict.
