The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has said it has heightened vigilance to prevent burglaries and robberies in vacant homes across major cities, including Dhaka, during the Eid holidays.
On Sunday, following an inspection at the National Eidgah, RAB Director General (DG) AKM Shahidur Rahman spoke to the press.
He said: “RAB has implemented adequate security measures at the National Eidgah and other Eidgahs to ensure the safety of Eid prayers and the smooth celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr across the country.”
In regard to enhancing security, Shahidur said measures have been taken since the beginning of Ramadan.
“With the increase in market transactions during Ramadan, crimes such as snatching and extortion have also risen. RAB has been working to control these crimes, and there has been some improvement in the situation.”
RAB will continue its duties in three phases: before Eid, on Eid day, and after Eid. Before Eid, RAB has been conducting operations to prevent snatching and extortion in markets and on roads, the RAB chief said.
He added that the elite police unit is working with other forces to ensure the smooth travel of people heading home for the holiday and to prevent robberies and reduce accidents on highways.
Regarding the security for Eid prayers and entertainment venues, RAB's DG mentioned that large Eid prayers will be held at various locations across the country. Therefore, RAB has made sufficient security arrangements for the National Eidgah as well as for Eid prayers at divisional and upazila levels.
Additionally, with the expected influx of people at entertainment centres and tourist spots, special measures have been taken to ensure the safety of women and children, preventing harassment, he added.
Security for empty homes
As cities empty out during the Eid holidays, there is a risk of burglaries and robberies. Therefore, RAB is remaining vigilant to secure vacant homes and has taken the necessary steps to ensure their safety, the DG said.
Measures will also be implemented to guarantee the safety of people returning after the holiday, he added.
He said RAB is actively working to prevent counterfeit currency, “molom parties”, and other crimes during Eid.
"This year, the Eid journey has been more comfortable compared to previous years, with less traffic congestion and reduced crime, making the celebrations more peaceful."
The RAB DG expressed confidence, saying: "Insha'Allah, this year's Eid will be celebrated smoothly, and all of RAB's efforts will continue."
