IGP Baharul: Please let us do our job

'While enforcing the law, the police are facing resistance in various places and are being attacked'

Update : 06 Mar 2025, 04:39 PM

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam urged the public to cooperate in maintaining law and order, requesting that they allow the police to perform their duties.

He mentioned that while enforcing the law, the police are facing resistance in various places and are being attacked.

IGP Baharul made these comments while attending a seminar on "Human Rights and Environmental Significance Amid Changing National Circumstances and Law Enforcement" at the Rangpur Divisional Commissioner's office on Thursday afternoon, where he also exchanged views with journalists.

He pointed out that when traffic police take measures to stop vehicles from driving in the wrong direction, some individuals even attempt to run them over with bicycles.

He urged everyone not to be overly emotional and to allow the police to carry out their duties.

The IGP said: "Let the police do their job; otherwise, it will not be possible for us to maintain law and order."

He further said: "At one point, most police stations in Dhaka were empty, and similar situations were observed across the country. Such an incident had not occurred since 1961."

He noted that corrupt officers within the police force have fled, and efforts are now being made to restore order.

"Those involved in crimes will certainly be held accountable. Many police officers who were engaged in illegal activities have already been arrested, and the remaining offenders will also face justice," the IGP added.

However, the IGP expressed concern over increasing obstructions while enforcing the law. "Our officers are unable to perform their duties properly, and in many places, they are being attacked," he added.

He made an appeal to the public, urging them to cooperate with the police in fulfilling their responsibilities and allowing them to work for the protection of people’s lives and property.
