Abrar Fahad, a Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student who was killed by members of the banned organization Chhatra League, has been posthumously awarded the Independence Award 2025.
On Monday, Asif Mahmud, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, announced the recognition in a Facebook post.
The post read: "A symbol of courage against injustice, a reflection of free thought—Abrar Fahad. His posthumous Independence Award 2025 is a recognition of his sacrifice. His ideals continue to inspire us in the pursuit of justice. The nation will not forget you, Abrar."
On the night of October 7, 2019, Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Buet, was beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League leaders and activists.
On December 8, 2021, the court sentenced 20 Buet students to death for their involvement in the murder.
