The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at East West University (EWU) organized a felicitation ceremony to honour its alumnus, Rifat Nabi, co-founder of the Bengali typing software “Avro” for receiving the prestigious Ekushey Padak, a national award of Bangladesh.
The event took place on February 20, 2025, at the university’s Manzur Elahi Auditorium.
The ceremony was graced by Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chief adviser of EWU and former governor of Bangladesh Bank as the chief guest. The event was presided over by Professor Dr M Ashik Mosaddik, pro-vice chancellor of EWU.
On the occasion, Rifat Nabi was honoured with a laptop computer as a token of appreciation.
In his speech, Rifat Nabi shared that his enthusiasm for programming flourished after enrolling at EWU, which eventually led him to join the Avro team.
He highlighted the importance of gaining knowledge and skills in one's area of interest that can be valuable in the future.
Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin expressed his pride in Rifat Nabi's achievement, saying that it brought honour to EWU. He also praised the ethical decision of Avro team leader Mehdi Hasan to accept the Ekushey Padak collectively with the team, highlighting the importance of integrity.
Other speakers at the event included Dr Mahin Islam, chairperson of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Dr Anisur Rahman, proctor of EWU.
The ceremony was attended by the guardians and relatives of Rifat Nabi, the treasurer, faculty members, officers, and students of EWU.
