A video showing members of a teen gang openly attacking a couple with machetes on a road in Sector 7 of Uttara, Dhaka, has gone viral on social media.
Following the incident, Uttara West police detained two individuals.
The detained suspects have been identified as Mobarak Hossain, 25 and Robi Roy, 22.
The attack took place around 10:30pm on Monday.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman of Uttara West police station said: “We have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident. The victims are receiving treatment at a hospital, and preparations for filing a case are underway.”
A video of the attack shows two young men violently striking the male victim and the woman accompanying him with machetes. At one point, the woman is seen pleading for mercy with folded hands. The incident has left residents of Uttara in fear.
According to police, on Monday night, the couple was traveling on a motorcycle along a road in Sector 7 when they got into a verbal altercation with two members of a local teen gang over honking.
Amid the dispute, one of the motorcycles collided with a rickshaw.
The teen gang members then physically assaulted the couple. Within ten minutes, other gang members arrived at the scene, where the couple was still present.
They proceeded to launch a brutal machete attack on the victims.
As locals intervened, the attackers attempted to flee, but residents managed to capture and beat two of them, and handed them over to the police.
