Update : 16 Feb 2025, 11:24 AM

Police have detained a man for allegedly threatening to attack the Bishwa Ijtema.

The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Roni Sarkar, was apprehended near Barishab Union Bazar in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur.

Meanwhile, nine dowry-free marriages were solemnized during the second phase of the Bishwa Ijtema.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Dr Nazmul Karim Khan provided these updates during a press conference in front of the police control room at the Ijtema ground on the banks of the Turag River in Tongi around 11am on Saturday.

Regarding the suspect's identity, the GMP commissioner said: “His full identity is not being disclosed at this time. Further interrogation is required. If sufficient evidence is found after investigation, legal action will be taken, and his identity will be revealed accordingly.”

He added that an organization was linked to the suspect’s social media profile, but initial findings suggest he is not a key member of any influential group.

On security arrangements, Dr Nazmul Karim Khan said: “A large number of volunteers are actively working on the ground. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert, with checkposts set up around the area. Continuous surveillance is being maintained through CCTV cameras and drones.”

He emphasized the importance of keeping roads clear to ensure a swift response in case of emergencies.

“We have coordinated with the fire service, and they are fully prepared. Our priority is to ensure that devotees can participate in the Ijtema peacefully and without any disruptions,” he added.

Dowry-free marriages

Following the Asr prayers on Saturday, nine dowry-free marriages were conducted in the foreign section of the Ijtema ground. The ceremonies were officiated by Maulana Yusuf bin Saad.

According to Mohammad Sayem, media coordinator of the Ijtema organizing committee under Maulana Saad's followers, the grooms were – Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Fazle Rabbi, Nur Hossain Sunny, Mafin Khan, Golam Mostafa, Naimur Rahman, Mohammad Shamim, Sajjad Hossain, and Sajib Khan.

After the marriage rituals, Maulana Yusuf bin Saad prayed for the well-being of the newlyweds and encouraged them to dedicate four months to religious outreach, known as “chilla”.

“A party is spreading rumours to discourage people from attending the Ijtema,” Sayem added. “We assure devotees that the event is continuing smoothly with strict security measures in place.”

The final phase of the 58th Bishwa Ijtema will conclude with the concluding prayer on Sunday.
