Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has said that Bangladesh’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) will include land, forests, and wetlands to enhance the nation’s climate mitigation efforts.
A 156-acre allocation is being canceled for unauthorized use
She made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled “Challenges in Planning and Implementing Carbon Emission Reductions from Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use under Bangladesh’s NDC” as the chief guest at the CIRDAP auditorium on Tuesday.
In her speech, Rizwana Hasan outlined key challenges, such as deforestation and land degradation, that hinder the achievement of NDC goals.
However, she reaffirmed the government's commitment to forest recovery initiatives despite these obstacles.
Highlighting specific actions, she mentioned the revocation of allocations for 700 acres of forest land to the Public Administration Academy and 20 acres to the Bangladesh Football Federation.
Additionally, she said that the process is nearing completion to cancel a 156-acre forest land allocation linked to the brother of a former Cabinet Secretary.
The seminar was chaired by Khushi Kabir, Chairperson of the Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD) and Coordinator of Nijera Kori.
Dr Dwijen Mallick, Fellow at the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), presented the keynote paper.
