UK Treasury Economic Secretary Tulip Siddiq has faced questioning from the Cabinet Office's propriety and ethics team over allegations of aiding her family in embezzling up to £3.9 billion from a nuclear energy project in Bangladesh, according to the Sunday Times.

The accusations claim that Tulip, daughter of Sheikh Rehana and niece of Bangladesh's former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, facilitated a corrupt deal with Russia for the Rooppur Power Plant project.

Representing Hampstead & Highgate, Tulip reportedly met with a representative from the Propriety and Ethics Team (PET) on Thursday to address the allegations.

During the meeting, which took place at her office, she provided her response regarding the Rooppur project and her alleged role in brokering the Russia deal.

The Sunday Times report also said that her explanation was accepted at face value, and the meeting does not imply the existence of a civil service investigation into her actions.

Tulip Siddiq was unavailable for comment.
