The Dhaka University (DU) administration has imposed strict regulations on the entry of non-university vehicles into its campus.
Responding to students' demands, the authorities have prohibited the entry of external vehicles on Fridays and Saturdays.
To enforce this policy, "Security and Surveillance Boxes" have been installed at the university's entry points. Members of the proctorial team are actively preventing non-university vehicles from entering the campus. While this move has brought relief to students, it has caused inconvenience to outsiders.
On Friday, all entry points were observed strictly enforcing the ban, with no external vehicles allowed inside the premises. Although traffic congestion remained minimal in the afternoon, minor jams were reported in surrounding areas by evening. Emergency vehicles were granted access after proper verification.
The university's proctor, Saifuddin Ahmed, said: “To ensure a safe campus, we are implementing this measure. We apologize for the initial inconvenience this may cause. Those arriving for emergency purposes will be granted access after verification, but those with no valid reason will not be allowed to enter.”
Students have welcomed this initiative, viewing it as a fulfilment of their long-standing expectations. Many have termed this move as the ‘best initiative’ of its time.
Sarwar Jahan, a student from the Department of Persian Language and Literature, expressed his satisfaction saying: “The campus becomes chaotic during holidays. It’s hard to feel like part of the university amidst the crowd of outsiders, compounded by the influx of vehicles. This increases the risk of accidents. We thank the university administration for considering our demands.”
Meanwhile, some outsiders have expressed their frustration.
Shahjalal Shahin, a private employee interviewed near Nilkhet, said he was out with his family on his motorbike for a holiday outing. He was unable to enter the campus due to the restriction and claimed he was unaware of the university’s decision, which caused him inconvenience.
Many others shared similar experiences of being inconvenienced by the new policy.
