ACC files 6 cases against ex-ministers, families over illegal assets

Their family members have also been accused of having wealth beyond known source of income

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed six separate cases against six individuals, including three former ministers, over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

The accused are former health minister Zahid Maleque and his son; former state minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak and his wife; and former state minister for Textiles and Jute Mirza Azam and his wife.

The approval of these cases came Thursday, the first day of the newly formed commission.

The information was confirmed to Dhaka Tribune Thursday afternoon by ACC's public relations officer, Aktarul Islam.

In the case against Zahid Maleque, the former health minister, the allegations include the acquisition of illegal wealth amounting to Tk61.56 crore. His son, Rahat Maleque, is accused of acquiring assets worth Tk11.84 crore beyond known sources of income.

Former state minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak is accused of acquiring assets worth Tk8.73 crore that are inconsistent with his known source of income. Additionally, he is implicated in abnormal transactions, having withdrawn Tk32.04 crore through 25 bank accounts.

Meanwhile, his wife, Arifa Jesmin, is accused of possessing Tk9.58 crore in illegal assets. She also faces allegations of conducting unusual transactions, with Tk22.34 crore deposited across 31 bank accounts and Tk17.56 crore in abnormal withdrawals.

Meanwhile, former state minister for Textiles and Jute Mirza Azam is accused of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk39.76 crore.
