Social media platforms, especially Facebook, have recently faced criticism for hosting gambling ads targeting Bangladeshi users with deepfake technology.
A Dismislab report reveals these ads use AI to create fake news reports and speeches promoting gambling apps.
Since September, nine deepfake videos appeared in over 140 Facebook ads, falsely claiming the interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, endorses and invests in gambling.
One video falsely shows Dr Muhammad Yunus promoting gambling apps, while others allege he legalized online casinos.
The ads also manipulate logos and footage from Bangladeshi media like "Somoy TV" and "Channel 24" to appear authentic to users.
One video falsely attributes a statement of a Channel 24 news anchor about flood relief linked to gambling apps, which the channel confirmed was doctored.
Another falsely claims that Sheikh Hasina will face extra jail time for casino-related issues.
These ads violate Bangladesh's High Court ban on gambling promotions and Meta's ad policies.
Dismislab previously reported similar campaigns using images of cricket stars and media logos.
Yunus’s deputy press secretary, Apurba Jahangir, called the videos fake and urged Meta to act quickly.
