Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has apologized to the families of those who lost their lives during the recent student movement.
Speaking at a press conference held at the police headquarters on Thursday, the IGP expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for those injured during the protests.
Addressing the excesses committed during the movement, Baharul Alam acknowledged that some police officers had violated the law in their efforts to support what he described as the interests of a "fascist government."
He also expressed sorrow for the innocent police officers who were killed during the unrest.
"On behalf of the entire police force, I sincerely apologize to the families of all the martyrs and express my heartfelt condolences," he said.
Baharul Alam officially assumed the role of IGP on November 21 following a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs issued on November 20. Thursday’s press conference marked his first public remarks in the position.
Following the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5 amid the mass student movement, Baharul Alam acknowledged the significant challenges faced by Bangladesh Police.
"Since August 5, the police have been navigating a critical juncture, working to protect lives and property," he said.
He added that efforts to restore operational normalcy within the police force are ongoing, supported by public expectations and government cooperation.
The IGP emphasized the importance of public trust and assistance in helping the police move forward, adding: "Without the support of the people, it will be difficult to overcome the current situation. I appeal for everyone’s sincere cooperation."
