The past election commissions conducted controversial and disgraceful elections, violating their oaths, he said

Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, chief of the Election Reform Commission, has said that there is widespread demand for the previous election commissions to be brought to justice.

He made these remarks on Sunday after a meeting with university professors and civil society leaders at the Election Commission building in Agargaon.

He said that the past election commissions conducted controversial and disgraceful elections, violating their oaths.

They have breached the constitution, and almost everyone is calling for them to be held accountable, he added.

Referring to the discussions with the scholars, Dr Badiul Alam Majumder said: "Today's discussion was different. They are very experienced and have in-depth knowledge on these issues. We truly had a dialogue with them and tried to learn from their perspectives.”

He said that it became clear from the discussion that everyone agreed on the necessity of a caretaker government.

The Election Commission must be made independent, strengthened, and, importantly, provided with financial autonomy.

He added: "There is consensus on the no vote provision. They also agree on the importance of political parties and democracy. If democracy is not established within political parties, it is unrealistic to expect democracy to be established in the state."

The head of the Reform Commission also mentioned that a lot of discussion took place regarding the presidential election.

Many participants supported direct elections and called for strengthening the office of the president.

There was also a consensus on women's direct elections, having their own electoral constituencies, and the need for election law reform.
