Update : 24 Nov 2024, 01:15 PM

The state has decided to appeal against the order to ban battery-operated rickshaws in Dhaka metropolitan area within three days.

Deputy Attorney General Nur Mohammad Azmi confirmed the decision on Sunday.

He said: "The state has decided to appeal against the order to ban battery-operated rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area within three days. Preparations for the application are underway."

Earlier, Jahurul Islam Masum, president of the Greater Dhaka City Corporation Pedal Rickshaw Owners Alliance, and Secretary Md Momin Ali filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking a ban on battery-operated rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area.

Following the hearing on the writ, the High Court on November 19 ordered a halt to the operation of battery-operated rickshaws in Dhaka within three days. The court also issued a rule asking why the inaction of the authorities in banning battery-operated rickshaws should not be declared illegal.

The court directed the implementation of the order by the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Commissioner of Police in Dhaka, and the authorities of the two Dhaka city corporations.

The order was issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Mahmudur Raji.

Barristers HM Sanjid Siddiqui and Tahsina Tasnim Mridu represented the petitioners in court.
