Economist Professor Anu Muhammad has called for building a society based on harmony, embracing all classes, races, professions, cultures, and religions.

Speaking at an event titled Unity in Diversity organized by the National Citizens' Committee at the National Shaheed Minar on Saturday, he emphasized the need for a Bangladesh free from inequality, oppression, and dominance. "We want a Bangladesh of diversity, not of disparity," he said.

The event, moderated by advocate Manzur Al Matin, included speeches from Samina Lutfa, Professor Dr Anu Muhammad, Abdul Quddus (general secretary of the Rickshaw and E-bike Union), Michael Chakma, and others.

Anu Muhammad highlighted the importance of diversity as a source of unity and strength in society. "This country is home to multiple ethnicities and cultures. Diversity is nature's gift, embodying the power of unity. Without it, society succumbs to inequality. We must stand against disparity and in favor of diversity," he said.

Referring to disruptions at the Lalon festival in Narayanganj, Anu Muhammad criticized groups that create divisions in the name of religion and oppose inclusivity and joy.

Addressing the challenges faced by workers, he urged the government to reform and enhance auto-rickshaw operations rather than adopting oppressive policies.

"Auto-rickshaw innovation arose from necessity. Instead of solving its flaws, the government continues to suppress workers. Future governments must prioritize the rights of workers, who form the majority, to build an inclusive state," he added.

Anu Muhammad also emphasized the unifying messages in the songs of Lalon and Shah Abdul Karim, condemning attacks on cultural expressions that embody diversity and unity.

The event featured cultural performances, including songs in the Mro language by Jahangirnagar University student Minthang Mro, dances by Akramul Hijra, and a play titled Abar Falgun by the theater group BotTola. Baul Sunil Karmakar, singer Krishnokoli, Nadeem Qawwal, and the band Songjwar also performed, showcasing the country's rich cultural tapestry.
