Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that previously the police filed fake cases, but now the public is doing the same.
He made this statement in response to a question from journalists regarding recent cases, during a media exchange session at the City Police Media Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The home adviser said: "Most cases are fake. Earlier, the police filed fake cases, listing 10 named and 50 unnamed accused. Now, the public is providing 10 names and 50 fake names. These cases are not filed by the police, RAB, or Ansar; they are being filed by the public. We are taking measures to ensure that no one is harassed during the investigation."
Jahangir Alam said: "Police officers who did not return to duty within the stipulated time after the movement will be punished. In our view, they are criminals and will be brought under the law. Those who can be found are being apprehended from time to time."
In response to a question from journalists, the home adviser said: "Previously, the police filed fake cases, listing 10 named and 50 unnamed accused. Now, the public provides 10 names and 50 unnamed individuals. We even spent money on newspaper advertisements so that the public would be aware of this matter."
Regarding the law and order situation, the adviser said: "The current law and order situation in Chittagong is moderate, but not yet satisfactory. We are working to bring it to a satisfactory level. You say the situation is not good, but you never mention when it was good. This time, the Puja was celebrated more smoothly than before, but that was mentioned only slightly. We did not receive as much acknowledgement as we expected."
He further said: "Various members of different forces were present at today’s meeting, and issues regarding their problems were discussed. We also discussed ways to further improve the law and order situation. In this regard, I seek the cooperation of journalists as well."
In response to questions about the ship bringing goods from Pakistan, the adviser said: "This ship is coming from the Middle East. It stopped in one country before arriving here. Is it banned for ships from any country to come to ours? Are we bound to only serve one country? My country comes first. Dates, onions, potatoes—these are needed during the upcoming Ramadan. Should we not let these come in? Those spreading such rumours are our enemies."
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Moinul Islam, Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) A K M Shahidur Rahman, Chittagong District Commissioner Farida Khanam, and Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz were also present.
