Farida Akhter, Adviser for Fisheries and Livestock, has lamented the absence of Brazilian investment in Bangladesh so far.
“I urge you to secure the first investment during your tenure,” she told Brazilian Ambassador to Dhaka, Paulo Fernando Dias Feres, at a reception on Friday.
The ambassador hosted the reception to celebrate the 202nd Independence Day of Brazil.
Brazil recognized Bangladesh's independence in 1972. However, the visit by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in April this year was the first-ever visit by a Brazilian foreign minister to Bangladesh.
The ambassador expressed optimism, noting that in the past year, three trade missions had visited Bangladesh.
Adviser Farida also sought Brazil’s support for Bangladesh’s bid to join BRICS, emphasizing the country's role as an emerging voice of the Global South.
She further called for Brazil’s support “in initiating and expediting the negotiation process for a possible preferential trade agreement with the South American trade bloc Mercosur, in the spirit of promoting South-South cooperation.
