Mahfuj: Sheikh Mujib's photo removed from Bangabhaban

'It is a shame for us that we could not remove his pictures from Bangabhaban after August 5,' Mahfuj Alam says

Update : 11 Nov 2024, 02:47 PM

The photo of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been removed from the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, Adviser Mahfuj Alam announced on Monday.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Mahfuj included a photo credited to another Adviser, Asif Mahmud, which shows the former standing in Darbar Hall.

The wall near which he stood previously featured a picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

However, the photo shared by Mahfuj did not include that picture.

Mahfuj wrote: "The photo of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - post '71 Fascist, is removed from Darbar Hall. It is a shame for us that we couldn't remove his pictures from Bangabhaban after the 5th of August. Apologies. But, he won't be seen anywhere till people's July spirit lives on.

"BAL (Bangladesh Awami League) must acknowledge and apologise for what Sheikh Mujib and his Daughter have done to the people of Bangladesh, starting from non-democratic '72 constitution to famine, laundering of billions and extrajudicial killings of thousands of dissidents and opponents (72-75, 2009-2024). Then, we can talk about pre-'71 Sheikh Mujib. Without apologies and trials of fascists, there won't be any kind of reconciliation."

On Sunday, three new advisers were added to the interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus.

They were sworn in at Bangabhaban in the evening, with the oath administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The new advisers are Sk Bashir Uddin, Managing Director of the AkijBashir Group; filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki; and Mahfuj Alam, who was special assistant to the chief adviser.
