When will winter arrive in Bangladesh?

Bangladesh could experience eight to 10 mild (8–10°C) to moderate (6–8°C) cold waves in next three months

Update : 08 Nov 2024, 12:37 PM

A hint of winter chill can already be felt in various parts of the country, with light fog in the early morning and evening signalling its imminent arrival.

However, it is not expected to settle in fully just yet.

In a three-month weather outlook issued last week, the met office provided a forecast of eight to 10 mild and two to four severe cold waves over the next three months in various regions.

But both daytime and nighttime temperatures may stay slightly higher than usual in the coming weeks.

Weather forecast until January

The BMD reported 29% more rainfall than usual in October and forecast that rainfall may remain average from November to January.

Additionally, two to five low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal, with one to two potentially developing into depressions or cyclonic storms.

Temperatures are expected to gradually drop from November onward, though both daytime and nighttime temperatures may remain somewhat higher than normal.

From late night to early morning, moderate to dense fog could develop over the northern, northwestern, central, and river basin areas, with light to moderate fog in other parts of the country.

Dense fog might reduce the difference between day and night temperatures, increasing the sense of cold.

During the next three months, the country could experience eight to 10 mild (8–10°C) to moderate (6–8°C) cold waves, with two to three of these potentially turning into severe cold waves (4–6°C) in the northwest, northeast, and central regions.

Weather forecast for next three days

The BMD provided a 72-hour forecast starting Friday.

For the 24 hours from 9am, the sky is expected to be partly cloudy with mainly dry weather across the country.

Night temperatures may drop slightly, while daytime temperatures are likely to remain unchanged.

From Saturday morning, there may be isolated showers or thunderstorms in parts of Barisal and Chittagong divisions, while other areas are likely to experience partly cloudy skies with dry conditions.

Night temperatures should remain almost unchanged, while daytime temperatures may increase slightly.

From Sunday morning, isolated showers or thunderstorms are expected in some parts of Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong divisions, while the rest of the country will see mainly dry weather with partly cloudy skies.

Night temperatures may rise slightly, while daytime temperatures may decrease by 1–2°C.
