200-year-old Kundubari Fair to begin Wednesday

The Kundubari Fair is held annually during Kali Puja and Diwali

Update : 29 Oct 2024, 05:08 PM

Putting an end to all speculation, the historic 200-year-old Kundubari Fair at Kundubari in Madaripur is finally set to begin.

The three-day fair will commence on Wednesday, with a four-tier security plan in place.

The Kundubari Fair is held annually during Kali Puja and Diwali. However, this year, debates and criticisms spread throughout the district about the fair’s suspension, with banners calling for its cancellation appearing on social media.

On Sunday, the district administration held a meeting at the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office, attended by religious leaders, local administration, army, RAB, police, and leaders of various organizations.

After gaining unanimous consent, the fair was given approval.

Earlier, on October 16, the local religious community had suspended the fair by putting up banners citing nine allegations, including obscenity, extortion, drugs, and gambling.

Although the lease was initially cancelled based on these complaints, the upazila administration later confirmed the fair would proceed in compliance with regulations.

Unlike previous years, where it was held for five days, this year the Kundubari Fair will last for three days, concluding on Friday.
