Asif Nazrul: Only Chief Adviser has authority to announce election dates

The law adviser clarifies his remark on possible election date

Update : 19 Oct 2024, 02:12 PM

A clarification has been issued regarding the news that quoted Law Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul as saying that elections might be held next year.

In a statement sent to the media on Saturday, under the title "Clarification on the Election," the law adviser said: "Recently, during a TV discussion, I mentioned that elections might be possible within the next year, but there are many factors involved. I didn’t have the opportunity to fully explain these factors in that discussion. From the government’s statements, it is clear that discussions about reforms and political consensus are being emphasized, and these are the factors I was referring to."

He emphasized that only the chief adviser has the authority to announce the election dates, saying: "Elections are a crucial policy decision, and the timing will be determined under the leadership of the Chief Adviser of the government. Only he has the authority to announce it."

On Thursday night, during Channel i's "Ajker Patrika" program, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Manab Zamin newspaper, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, asked the law adviser about the possible date of the election.

In response to the question of when the election could take place, the law adviser said: "I think it might be possible to hold elections within the next year. There are many factors. This is a primary assumption."

Asif Nazrul further said that some media outlets are portraying this as an official election announcement, which is incorrect.
