The government on Monday announced the 9-member constitution reform commission to review and evaluate the constitution.
Under the leadership of political scientist and writer Professor Ali Riaz, this 9-member commission will prepare a report on recommendations for constitutional reform.
The report will be submitted to the government within 90 days.
This information was disclosed in a notification from the Cabinet Division.
The other members of the commission are Professor Sumaiya Khair of the Law Department at Dhaka University, Barrister Imran Siddiqui, Professor Muhammad Ikramul Haq of the Law Department at Dhaka University, Supreme Court lawyer Dr Sharif Bhuiyan, Barrister Moin Alam Firozi, writer Firoz Ahmed, writer and human rights activist Mo Mustain Billah, and student representative Mo Mahfuz Alam.
The notification states that the Constitution Reform Commission has been formed with the approval of the Chief Advisor of the interim government to review and evaluate the existing constitution with the aim of establishing representative and effective democracy and empowering the people, along with providing necessary recommendations in the report.
The commission will prepare the report within the next 90 days, considering everyone's opinions, and submit it to the Chief Advisor of the interim government.
The notification further mentions that all relevant ministries, departments, offices, and agencies of the Republic will provide necessary information and data as per the commission's requirements and offer all forms of cooperation.
The commission may include suitable individuals as members if necessary.
The Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs will also provide secretarial support to the commission, as stated in the notification.
