September saw 392 road accidents across Bangladesh, resulting in 426 deaths, including 61 women and 53 children, and 813 injuries, according to the Road Safety Foundation.
During the period, 164 motorcycle accidents resulted in the deaths of 179 people, accounting for 42% of the total number of fatalities, as mentioned in an accident report sent out on Monday by Saidur Rahman, executive director of the foundation.
There were also eight waterway accidents, where 11 people were killed, four injured, and two are still missing.
Furthermore, 17 train track accidents led to 13 deaths and nine injuries.
The report was compiled based on information from nine national dailies, seven news portals, various electronic media, and their own data.
The organization’s observation and analysis indicate that the accidents occurred in the following locations: 162 on national highways, 144 on regional roads, 47 on rural roads, 34 on city roads, and five in other locations.
The main causes of road accidents, as noted by the foundation, are:
- Faulty vehicles;
- Reckless speed;
- Drivers' reckless mentality, incompetence, and physical-mental illness;
- No fixed salary or working hours;
- Slow-moving vehicles on highways;
- Reckless motorcycle driving by young people;
- Lack of public awareness and adherence to traffic laws;
- Weak traffic management;
- Lack of capacity in the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority;
- Extortion in the public transport sector.
