Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said holding an election is the number one priority of the Dr Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.
Mirza Fakhrul further said BNP has called on Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus to announce the roadmap for the upcoming election and demanded that the law, which placed voter ID cards under the Ministry of Home Affairs, be revoked through an ordinance.
BNP also demanded that no controversial individuals be included in the committee formed for electoral reforms.
Mirza Fakhrul made the statements to journalists following a meeting with the chief adviser on Saturday.
He also mentioned that BNP demanded that all commissioners of the last three Election Commissions, who conducted the fraudulent, controversial, and biased elections of 2014, 2018, and 2024, be brought under the law.
"We have also called for the cancellation of all Union Parishads,” Fakhrul added.
In response to a question about the election, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: "I did not discuss months or dates. They [the government] are saying that holding the election is their number one priority. They are considering everything. Our demands are the people's demands.”
A delegation of six members of BNP sat in dialogue with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Saturday afternoon.
BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir led the six-member delegation.
