Nurses suspend nationwide strike until Thursday

Warned if their demands were not met promptly, strike would continue for two more days

Update : 01 Oct 2024, 10:29 PM

The ongoing nationwide strike by nurses, demanding the withdrawal of all cadre officers from the Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery and their replacement with experienced nurses, has been suspended until Thursday.

Dr Mohammad Shariful Islam, central committee convener of the Nursing and Midwifery Reform Council, made the announcement on Tuesday night.

Earlier in the day, nurses began their strike from 9am to 12pm across both government and private hospitals in support of their single-point demand.

They warned that if their demands were not met promptly, the strike would continue for two more days.

While emergency services such as ICU, CCU, and other critical wards were exempt from the strike, disruptions were still reported.

Despite promises of emergency squads, several wards at Dhaka Medical College Hospital were left without nurses, leading to significant frustration among patients who were unable to receive care.
