A Chittagong court on Tuesday placed former Chittagong-6 MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury on a two-day remand in a vandalism case.

Chittagong Judicial Magistrate Nurul Harun issued the order after a hearing.

Previously, the police had shown him arrested in five different cases filed against him.

On Tuesday morning, strict security measures were enforced in and around the court premises ahead of Fazle Karim Chowdhury's remand hearing.

A large number of police personnel were deployed, yet protests were held against him in the court.

Raozan police Inspector (Investigation) Siddiqur Rahman said that the remand application was made in a case where Fazle Karim Chowdhury was the primary accused for the vandalism of a prayer hall belonging to the Muniria Youth Tabligh Committee's Daleinagar-Noazispur branch.

He was brought to court in the morning, and the police applied for a seven-day remand. After the hearing, the court granted a two-day remand.

Previously, on August 23, the organizational secretary of the Muniria Youth Tabligh Committee, Muhammad Alauddin, filed the case against Fazle Karim Chowdhury, his son Faraz Karim Chowdhury, and 68 others.

So far, Fazle Karim has been shown arrested in three cases from Panchlaish, Chawkbazar, and Chandgaon police stations in the city and two cases from Raozan police station.

Fazle Karim had been in hiding since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government following the student-people uprising on August 5. On September 12, he was arrested while trying to flee to India illegally through the Akhaura border in Brahmanbaria.

Fazle Karim Chowdhury was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Chittagong-6 Raozan constituency under the Awami League's nomination in 2001, 2008, 2014, 2018, and 2024.
