A local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed when a speeding covered van ran over him on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Pantichila area of Sitakunda upazila on Monday morning.
The victim was Anwar Hossain, 42, eldest son of late freedom fighter Ishaq Miah of Muhuri village in Baroiardhala union of the upazila.
He was the secretary of the Baroiardhala union unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Kumira Highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Hakeem Azad confirmed the death.
The accident occurred this morning when the covered van crashed into the motorbike from behind in the Poursad area of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, leaving him dead on the spot, the OC said.
The covered van evaded capture and sped away shortly after the accident, added the OC.
