Nurses working in hospitals across the country, including Dhaka, have launched a protest over remarks made by the Director General of the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery, Maqsura Noor.
They held human chains nationwide demanding the resignation of Maqsura Noor.
They warned that if their demands were not met, they would observe a work stoppage on Sunday. Representatives of the nurses also announced that a larger action plan will be revealed at a press conference.
During the human chain, the nurses issued a stern warning, stating their single demand: highly educated and experienced nurses must be appointed to the positions of Director General, Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery, and president and registrar of the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council.
The protesting nurses said that although they had previously been assured that their demand would be met, on September 12, a non-nurse administrative officer was once again appointed to the position of registrar, which has further fueled their anger.
On September 8, Maqsura Noor made a statement demeaning the nursing profession.
In her remarks, she referred to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s decision to grant second-class status to nurses as a "mistake."
This sparked outrage among the nursing community, leading to protests that began on September 9.
