Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has announced that the controversial “Aynaghor”, which was used for enforced disappearance, created during the previous government have been shut down.
He made the announcement during his address to the nation on Wednesday. Dr Yunus addressed the nation on the occasion of the one-month anniversary of assuming office. His speech was broadcast simultaneously on Bangladesh Television and all private television channels on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
The Chief Adviser said: "Recently, we have signed the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. As a result, we are now internationally committed to ending the disappearance culture established by the dictatorship. Moreover, we are forming a separate commission to investigate every case of disappearance during the 15-year fascist regime. We stand in solidarity with those families who have been waiting for years in agony to find their missing fathers, husbands, sons, and brothers."
He added that the Aynaghor have been shut down, and along with that, the sufferings and pain of the brothers and sisters who were victims of forced disappearances under the fascist Hasina government are now being revealed.
On August 5, the Awami League government fell due to a mass uprising led by students and the public. On August 8, Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus was appointed chief adviser to lead the interim government.
