Surveillance will be maintained by various intelligence agencies

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has strengthened security measures around the countrywide “Shahidi March” for Thursday, marking one month since the fall of the Awami League government amid a mass uprising.

According to the DMP, multiple layers of security have been implemented to prevent any sabotage or disorder related to the march.

Along with deploying striking forces at various points, plainclothes police officers will also be on duty. Police personnel will be stationed at the front, inside, and behind the Shahidi March.

Additionally, surveillance will be maintained by various intelligence agencies.

To manage traffic and avoid public inconvenience, the DMP Traffic Division said that there will be diversions on certain roads.

The DMP said that traffic arrangements will be made based on the crowd size and number of participants in the Shahidi March.

Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Khondakar Nazmul Hasan of DMP said that traffic congestion is typically high on Thursdays.

Senior traffic officers will be present on the roads to manage traffic and resolve congestion during the Shahidi March, he added.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced a countrywide “Shahidi March” for Thursday.

One of the coordinators of the movement, Sarjis Alam, announced the program during a press conference at Dhaka University on Wednesday.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, under which students began protesting for reforms to the government job quota system in early July, gained momentum after attacks by pro-government groups and law enforcement, eventually evolving into a movement for the government's overthrow.

Facing intense protests, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India on August 5, ending the Awami League’s nearly 16-year-long rule.

Three days after the fall of the Awami League government, on August 8, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus was sworn in.
