Dr Asif Nazrul, the interim government’s adviser for the law ministry, has said he hopes the national cricket team’s ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is currently in Pakistan for a bilateral series and accused in a murder case, will not be arrested upon his return to the country.
Shakib had not brought anything controversial to Bangladesh's politics, the adviser said on Wednesday while speaking to reporters. “He has achieved a lot on his own. It is just that a case has been filed against him."
"This is a matter for the police, and we have said we needed to say. Just because a case or FIR has been filed does not necessarily mean an arrest will follow. I believe the home ministry will take steps to ensure that no one gets overenthusiastic about making an arrest."
Shakib is an accused in a case filed over the death of Rubel, who died on August 7, succumbing to gunshot wounds during a protest march on August 5 on Ring Road in Adabor, Dhaka.
Rafiqul Islam, the father of the deceased, filed the case on August 22 with Adabor police station.
Following the filing of the case, a Supreme Court lawyer sent a legal notice to the Bangladesh Cricket Board asking it to remove Shakib from the national cricket team and bring him back to the country for investigation purposes.
